Hide Behind the Well

·

Hide Behind the Well are nine instrumental pieces about home. The pieces were composed in a historic house on the street I grew up on. The songs are framed by the space of the house, my own transitions, forgoeing lyrics in favor of expression through arrangement, and allowing lightness and play to seep through.

The music was composed in the early morning, as jetlag allowed the sunrise to come, often marking the conclusion of the song.  Forgoing my usual DAWs, this was arranged and recorded with Audacity to prioritize for spontaneity over planned arrangements. The songs were entirely recorded with analogue instruments, using tools and sounds of the house itself like the coffee machine and glasses fashioned into percussion, to capture what was there in my two week visit to my hometown to visit my newly born niece.

A dozen pieces of home come together: instruments I could find in my childhood home (including my father’s baritone, and an appalachian dulcimer built by my uncle), two songs with a friend, recorded in the house of my closest childhood friend’s great grandmother, of whom I have fond memories of her and the house, playing the piano she used to play.

i am tired i don’t want to go home

An experiment in improvisation and sifting– the five improvised lyrical pieces are pulled from over 25 hours of unrepeated recordings. Together, their pitch-bent imperfections draw a waning crescent.
